DBG: Rip 769 HP Ford 351 Cleveland, Now We Now The Rest Of The Story...No Band-Aid Fix
This video documents me, Pulling the 769 hp 409ci Ford 351 Cleveland. I had to drain the water out of the engine, ( I was told by Darin Morgan, that I have to use a 7lb. radiator cap, heads are paper thin in certain areas) and hook up engine hoist, and remove the engine. I was hoping some help, but it never happened, until the end. Engine was transferred to the engine stand. Alaina the Bossette, and myself, started to remove the oil pan, then Mrs. DragBoss came in to see what going on. She had helped me turn engine over to remove oil pan. Alaina, removed the oil pan bolts, and I pulled the pan to see a nightmare sitting on the Windage tray. Dang oil pimp pick up broke at the weld. At the end of the video, you can some of the damage to the rods, and crank. These are toast, so let me tear this apart and see what we are going to do. Stay tuned to DragBoss Garage, "

DBG: 769 HP Ford 351 Cleveland, Drops Oil Pressure To 0 psi at 8400 rpm, How bad Could It Be ?
Переглядів 6 тис.21 день тому
This video shows the diagnostics, and evaluation of the no oil pressure experience. Izzy the Bossette, pulled the plugs to check for damage, debris, and excessive oil. The plugs look great. Then Izzy did a compression test of all 8 cylinders, while simultaneously checking the oil pressure gauge. All cylinders about 200 psi cranking compression, and the gauge in car has no problem. Izzy, then re...

This video is from 5/10/2024. Big shout out to Mike Clanton, who came out to watch me race. Thanks for coming out Mike! This is the first runs, after I pulled the rear center section, axles, and brakes, to evaluate, after I hear a metallic knocking noise. Many including myself, thought that it was a center section, or axle/bearing. It turned out to be a loose shock. I put everything back togeth...

This video explains the procedure of adjusting the float level on Advanced Product Design (APD) carburetors. APD uses their own floats for their carbs, so with their adjustment, they like to see 0.750 distance from the parting line of the float, to the floor of the float bowl. John Kyle, does mention that floats with a higher parting line will require larger distance, .ie Holley floats have a h...

Looking at it, may be more NASCAR related. It is based on an Dry Sump XE Cleveland, with roller cam, and valve ...

I'm trying to find a video about sleeving a 351 Cleveland. They talked about core filling drag only engines. But I was wondering about the old partial fill for hot street cars.
Port plates from mpg is what I run.Tongue ss lat that sandwiches between header and head.Although,on the exhaust side, with the "high port" design, the header should exit out the head 3" before making a bend or it defeats the purpose? Anyone else heard of this?
That thing is built, love the sound of the high compression N/A engine
They work but I tell you one thing. If you really start pushing it to its limits the rods that hold it together can stretch and the specific bearings in each end may start to come apart too. When I worked for a company called AED we had one that was used in our wet flow bench. It was getting to the point where the one we had was getting beat on pretty bad with the newer much larger carburetors so we ended up using a Pro Charger on it.
great job on the video Mrs Drag BOSS enjoy brings back memories .Tim also enjoyed all show with Rusty Glidden, W J,and many more love the Mercury Cougar , Mustang lots of luck keep up the good work.
What a pity Tim and Family, can’t wait to see the Mighty Clevo going again You have great help there I can see with great little Questions love Your work Cheers Mick Australia. Love the Site Winter here cold an d Beautiful
To Me the 4v heads with those huge ports are just crying out for some boost , That pantera motor should be a chunky piece!
Back in 1994 I bought a used sky blue 1986 Ford Thunderbird that someone removed the V6 and put a hopped-up 351 Cleveland in it.... That car was literally a speed demon.... ! I will never forget that beautiful car.... ! I used to scare a lot of friends in that car lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You make any progress Tim ? The shortblock salvageable? Need to start over minus Top End ? I am about ready to head to the machine shop with my 1970 Trans Am RAIV shortblock many 1 off parts. BES Racing my top pick along with Steve Morris.
Have not done much, let it sit and spent time with family, past few weeks. Need to get back on it. Talked to molnar and he will help me with crank and rods. Will need lifters. Getting new pan and pick up from stefs. Try and make a video this weekend. Frank Iaconio invited us to the races, so will be there Sunday. I had Steve Morris on for a live chat. Great guy. You know my association with BES. Stay tuned
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Try and line up the parts needed Tim. Deposit or bought in hand. Things are going to get crazy in the USA next few months. Likely no parts available maybe even for daily drivers. I spent a small fortune $$$$ last 4 months buying all to get my 1970 Pontiac T/A back on the Road. Also parts for the daily drivers. Also get it now before more Super Inflation kicks in.
I’ve bled Chevrolet since birth, I must say that ole girl sounds right. Would you care to share any details of the internals?
Thanks Much. Brief, 409ci cleveland, with Ford heads, made 775hp with dominator and 769 with 4150. Two different intakes. 13.3, 273/284@.050 and .744/.727 lift. Running 9.32 at 143 and best of 1.25 60. Dam pick up broke and just took out the motor. Made me sick. Working on it now.
@@DragBoss351Cleveland Sweet, she sounds good. Man I felt that kick in the nuts feeling when I read the tube snapped off. We just do it all again 👍🏻👊🏻 Thanks and good luck with her.
It's just amazing.... They started building the 351 Cleveland back in 1969, 55 years ago... today they are still building and using this engine for racing and still winning races.... That should tell you who is BOSS !
Right on Thomas. I have the first cleveland block. It is from 1968. The Boss, that’s what I’m talking about 💯
@@DragBoss351Cleveland :-) !
@Thomasp671 The First 351 Cleveland Block SK6877 ua-cam.com/video/zirDZ-Sd7AU/v-deo.html
Ford made a D3 4v head. Same intake port but smaller valve. Some Pantera owner channels say it's the better head. Personally, I have found that head to make great torque with a flat top.
Well, since the exhaust port is the way it is, how much extra duration and lift can you grind in a cam to compensate ?
I have used 8-11 degrees
Seemed like Ford was always more worried about getting the charge in than getting it out.
I think more to do with shock towers causing issues with exhaust exit.
I don't know why this video popped up, but fun to listen to it at and read all the comments. Best thing to do when taking a break.
Thanks for watching. Check out my channel live chats. There is so much to learn.
I know I would I do on all
Do on all?
This guy was dying to meet the Drag Boss.

Wow! That’s a work of art!!!
For sure. Need to get them on the 427 aluminum Cleveand

Killer that it added 100hp bolt on. Love it too 💯🏁

Watched Hot Rod Hoarder yesterday where he talked about this and showed one to. Was it really any good?
The good thing is in 1959, you could add a hundred horse. I love the sound for sure
Hey, I was just going to say hi for several reasons. First, I live in Albuquerque, NM right now and have personal friends that were personal friends of Dyno Don. Second my personal friends have a 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7, 351, Windsor I think. And last I grew up in Cleveland, obviously familiar with Sandusky and the islands. I actually grew up very near Elyria in Lorain County. I hope to move back to Ohio in the future
Thanks Patrick for commenting. Sounds like you’re well connected. Love hearing this story. Move back, only half hr away from Elyria. See you soon
Hey Tim thanks for the tunnel Ram I see the one you sold me with the purple blueing I guess it’s jack Roush old one cool I noticed one mounting pad is cut down lower than the rear one so one carb the front one sits lower I may have to machine the back one down to match the front so carbs are level with each other may be they did that for a reason 🤷🏼
You’re welcome my friend. Your are right, that is Jack Roush handwriting right there. I did notice that too. He also had the top on backwards. It will match the car, with its famous history
I was listening to Bob Alameda Racing. He talked about preventing detonation by adding a V-grove to siphon air/fuel mixture from under the quench. Can you refer this idea to Morgan , the head porting expert. He talked about detonation 2yrs ago on this channel. N/A application. Also he showed a piston with a dip in it and a mod to the edge of the piston top.
Be a great talk. But he is so busy, does not have time right now. I will send him this and see what he says.
Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time to make it
Your welcome. Just another way to look at things. With laser accuracy Johnny
I have never heard anyone mention RICKY SMITH. He raced against Glidden in the 70's. Ricky Smith raced in IHRA & NHRA. Currently he races in Pro Mod. I'm sure there's video of NHRA with him racing Pro Stock. He's still in North Carolina.
I have been thinking of getting in touch with him and see if he wants to chat. Great idea
The trans builder CRT could not fix it so I moved on after3yrs of trying to fix and 5k$to go to a th400. I got 3k for 2 727 in the switch to a Rossler. Life ain't bad I started a weight loss program going well on meds but big $.
Mike , have not been around much. Had to walk away from engine, for a couple of weeks. Working way more than normal. Lots of family stuff. Hoping no tranny issues and I can just freshen motor.
@DragBoss351Cleveland you do what you can and things will progress. Do you make list of things to do in some kind of order and adjust to what life gives you?
Stick or auto, you can make either really fast. But I do like driving manuals at the dragstrip a lot more, they are more fun and a challenge.
Agreed. I will soon find out how fun they are.
